a.s.e. office II, ahmedabad

This project deals with the adaptive reuse of an old structure with high heritage value, located in the estate of ASE ltd. The design involves careful restoration, alterations & additions to suit the requirements of an office. It is the second in a series of three adaptive re-use projects done at ASE ltd.
The old structure in this case was made with brick masonry walls supporting a hip roof with two trusses in the central portion. This hip roof, an L-verandah made with masonry jaali and an entrance portico with cast iron columns, play an important role in defining the architectural character of this heritage building. The design focuses on the restoration of the roof to its original form, but with new steel rafters and purlins. The two trusses which were in a relatively better condition have been retained with necessary repairs.
The east side wing with new utility services has been redone with a concrete slab, by removing the old extension of the hip roof on that side. This restores the roof to its original proportions above the main structure. Other alterations as per new requirements also follow and adapt to the existing structure.
The design and expression of interior elements is kept robust and austere with a restrained selection of materials that includes kotah stone, wood and glass, again complementing the architectural character of the old structure.
